Darbyson, Allen Burnup

DARBYSON, Allen Burnup (1891-1968), architect of Montreal, Que. where he practiced under his own name from 1920 until his retirement in 1959. Born in Chelsea, Quebec on 24 November 1891, he attended the Commercial & Technical High School in Montreal and served an apprenticeship with James A. Adamson of Montreal in 1908-10, then studied architecture at McGill University from 1911 to 1915 when he graduated. After serving with the Canadian Army during WW1, he returned to Montreal and opened an office in 1920, and joined the Province of Quebec Assoc. of Architects during that same year. Darbyson designed a number of school buildings for the Protestant School Board, but the majority of his commissions were for residential projects and small apartment buildings in the west end of Montreal. He retired in 1959 and later died in Montreal on 8 November 1968 (death notice The Gazette [Montreal], 12 Nov. 1968, 39; inf. from Province of Quebec Assoc. of Architects, Membership Application dated 15 January 1939)
