Hubbard, John G.

HUBBARD, John G. (1834 – c. 1870) of Tignish, Prince Edward Island was described as 'the architect' of the new Masonic Hall, Poplar Street at Central Street, Alberton, P.E.I., 1866-67 (Summerside Journal, 28 Feb. 1867, 2, descrip.). This unpretentious two-storey landmark was originally owned by Herbert Bell who fitted up the lower floor as a retail store and warehouse in 1867. It is still in use today as a fraternal hall, and has been in continuous use as a Freemason's Lodge since 1867. The building is now listed by Parks Canada as one of Canada's Historic Properties, and was designated on 29 April 2008. Hubbard was born in 1834 and was active in the building trades in Tignish before 1860. In 1864 he was accepted as a member of the Freemason's order, and was listed as a “Joiner” by profession (Freemason Membership Registers – United Grand Lodge, entry for John G. Hubbard of Tignish, 23 Nov. 1864). No information has yet been found on his other works in western Prince Edward Island.
