McCulloch, Peter

McCULLOCH, Peter (1811-1901) was active as an architect and carpenter in Burlington and in the Halton County region of southern Ontario during the period 1867 until 1880. In 1867 he was credited with the Gothic design of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Nelson Township. This church still stands in 2020 and is located on the south side of Dundas Street, BURLINGTON, ONT., just west of Walker's Line, and east of the present Highway 407. A description of the church, which opened in February 1868, was published in the Canadian Champion [Milton], 5 March 1868, p. 3, col. 1, where it was stated that the design of the church and the interiors “...reflects great credit on the artistic skill of Mr. McCulloch, the architect”.

McCulloch was born in Scotland in 1811 and arrived in Canada before 1850. The 1871 Census of Canada lists his profession as “architect”, living and working in Nelson Twp. in Halton County. Nearly 10 years later, in 1880, he was noted as an resident of the town of Burlington, where his occupation was listed as “architect” (W.H. Irwin & Co., County of Halton Gazetteer & Directory for 1881-85, pub. 1880, p. 70)., and other sources confirm that he offered his services as an architect and carpenter for at least 13 years, making him one of the first in Halton County to sustain a career providing plans for buildings. He died in Halton County on 8 November 1901 at the age of 90 years.
