Bowman, Leander Meyer

BOWMAN, Leander Meyer (1863-1895), an architect who lived and worked in Lindsay, Ontario from 1888 to 1891. He was recorded as “the architect” for the Public School in the town of MANILLA, ONT., located in Mariposa Township, west of Lindsay (Victoria Warder [Lindsay], 4 Oct. 1889, 1, col. 6). Bowman was born in Berlin [now Kitchener] on 29 December 1863 and began work as a civil engineer in 1879 under the supervision of his father. He was educated at the School of Practical Science at the Univ. of Toronto from 1883 to 1886, then moved to Kansas City, but he returned to Lindsay, Ont. in December 1888. In 1891 he moved to Toronto to take up the position of sanitary engineer with the Dept. of Health, City of Toronto. He died there unexpectedly on 20 September 1895 (obituary The Globe [Toronto], 21 Sept. 1895, 20; Mail & Empire [Toronto], 21 Sept. 1895, 14; obit C.A.B., viii, Oct. 1895, 116).
