Hodgson, Gilbert

HODGSON, Gilbert (1874-1960) was born in Sempringham, Co. Lincolnshire, England on 21 October 1874 and attended Technical Schools at Bedford and Weymouth in 1894-95. He articled with a 'Mr. Bennett' of Weymouth and with F.T.W. Goldsmith, an architect in London, and in 1900 he joined the City Architect's Department in Liverpool where he met William S. Bates. Both were asked to collaborate on the design of the new City Hospital there and Hodgson also designed the city swimming baths. In May 1904 Hodgson emigrated to Canada with the intention of taking a position with the Calgary architectural firm of Wilson & Wetenhall (Daily Herald [Calgary], 21 May 1904, 4). After arriving there, he formed a partnership, at first with his colleague W.S. Bates and J. Llewellyn Wilson, and then in 1906 with Bates alone, and together they conducted a successful practice by obtaining major commissions for commercial, industrial and residential projects in Calgary and in southern Alberta. In 1910 they invited Ernest N. Butler to join the partnership; Butler remained with them until early 1913 when Owen K. Beattie took his place.

By 1915 the partnership had dissolved, and Hodgson continued to list himself as an architect in Calgary until 1920. The following year he took up the position of Managing Director for the Alberta Self-Locking Concrete Wall Co. Ltd., a venture that may have been shortlived because in 1922 he was working as a draftsman with the Dominion Irrigation Co. in Calgary. He appears to have left Calgary in late 1923 and he moved to California in early 1924, taking up residence in San Carlos (near San Francisco) where he opened an office, and established a branch office in nearby Burlingame, Calif. By 1931 he had relocated to Redwood City, Calif. (R.L. Polk, Redwood City Directory, 1931-32, 76). He continued to practise there as an architect until after 1940, and he eventually returned to Calgary in 1957. He died there on 26 May 1960 (obituary Calgary Herald, 27 May 1960, 31; biog. R.I.B.A., Directory of British Architects 1834-1914, 2001, i, 928-29). The Glenbow Museum at Calgary, Alta. holds a collection of architectural drawings prepared by Hodsgon during the period of 1906 to 1913 when he was in partnership with William S. Bates, Owen K. Beattie and Ernest N. Butler (Glenbow Museum, W.S. Bates Coll., Acc. BB329)
