Peters, Frank Harry

PETERS, Frank Harry (1868-1946), an architect and architectural draftsman recorded in southern Saskatchewan during the period from 1890 to 1893. He was among the very first group of professional architects active in Regina, Sask., and was credited with the Gothic design of St. Paul’s Anglican Church in 1893-94. Peters was born in Quebec City, Que. on 8 July 1868, and was the son of Henry Joseph Peters, a leading contractor and builder in that City, and he may have learned the building trades under the supervision of his father before moving to the Northwest Territories in 1889. While living and working in Prince Albert, Sask. in 1890, he advertised himself as an ‘architectural draftsman’, who was prepared to “…furnish Plans and Specifications of modern and moderate cost houses at reasonable rates” (Prince Albert Times, 30 May 1890, 4, advert.). In 1891 he moved to Moose Jaw where he was recorded as a carpenter, and the following year he had relocated to Regina. In 1896 he left Canada and moved to southern California where he continued his career as an architect in Los Angeles for the next 30 years. He died there on 3 May 1946 (obituary Los Angeles Times, 7 May 1946, 8).
