Stahl, Kinsey & Chapman

STAHL, KINSEY & CHAPMAN, architects of Detroit, Michigan, active 1910 to 1915, were recorded as the designers of a number of commercial and residential works in Windsor, Ontario, directly across the Detroit River from their main office in Detroit. The firm consisted for John Clarence Stahl Jr. (1877-1943), and John Emerson Kinsey, Sr. (1873-1962), together with the engineer Washington Hobart Chapman (1876-c. 1950). Both Stahl and Kinsey formed a partnership in Detroit in early 1912 (Detroit Free Press, 21 Jan. 1912, Section Two, p. 12). Stahl was a native of Elkhart, Indiana, but Kinsey was a Canadian, born in Ontario on 7 January 1873, and he may have trained as an engineer in Essex County before moving to Michigan. He joined the partnership of Stahl & Kinsey in late 1913 or early 1914, but their collaboration appears to have ended in 1916 when the United States joined the overseas war effort in Europe. Stahl later died at Elkhart, Indiana on 5 December 1943; Kinsey died in Livingstone County, Michigan on 15 September 1962.
