Cox, Edward Morris

COX, Edward Morris (1875-1958), active in Ottawa, Ont. where he worked at first as a civil servant, then in private practise, and later again as a civil servant. Born in Canterbury, England in 1875, he served his articles with Colwell & Bromley, Architects from 1892 to 1895, and continued to work for that firm from 1896 to 1911, becoming a junior partner. He emigrated to Canada in 1911 and was employed as a draftsman with Edward & W.S. Maxwell, a leading firm in Montreal, from 1913 to 1917. In 1918 he moved to Ottawa, taking a position with the Dept. of Public Works, and remained there until 1921 when he left to join the private sector as an assistant in the office of J. Albert Ewart, a prominent architect in Ottawa. He remained with him until 1934 when he received the appointment of Chief Architect to the Department of National Defense, a post which he held until his retirement in 1949. In early 1952 he helped to prepare plans for the new Carleton Memorial United Church in Ottawa. Cox died in Ottawa on 15 November 1958 (obituary Ottawa Citizen, 17 Nov. 1958, 37; inf.
