Copeman, Colin Hamilton

COPEMAN, Colin Hamilton (1907-1995), active in Montreal, Que. From 1933 until after 1970. Born in Quebec City on 31 July 1907, he studied architecture at McGill University in Montreal from 1926 and graduated in 1930. His early training during the summer period between terms was with the Toronto firm of Wickson & Gregg (in 1927), with the Montreal office of Lyman & Chipman (1929), and David J. Spence (1930). In the depths of the Depression in 1933, he decided to open his own office (R.A.I.C. Journal, x, Nov. 1933, 194), and he was later in partnership with David Shennan in 1939-40 (see list of works under D. Shennan). He was appointed Director of Construction for the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941, and continued his career as an architect after WWII. Copeman was elected as a Fellow of the R.A.I.C. in 1961, and later died in Montreal on 26 July 1995 (death notice Gazette [Montreal], 31 July 1995, D8; biog. National Reference Book, ix, 1951)
