Williamson, Clare Victor

WILLIAMSON, Clare Victor (1889-1933), active in Windsor, Ontario where he was a partner in the firm of Watt, Jacques & Williamson, Architects from February 1910 (see list of works under John M. Watt). Their collaboration was brief, and when Watt left the partnership in July 1910 to continue his own office in London, Ont., both Jacques & Williamson opened a new office in Windsor (see list of works under Gilbert Jacques). Williamson was born in Walkerville, Ont. on 10 April 1889, son of Victor Williamson, a general contractor, but no information has been found on his education and training. According to a biography of C.V. Williamson published in 1910, he was said to have “…studied architecture in England for some time” before returning to Windsor, Ont. (Evening Record [Windsor], 30 July 1910, 1). The office of Jacques & Williamson was successful in obtaining several commissions in the Essex County region, but it too was dissolved after a brief period of time, in August 1911, with Jacques remaining in Windsor, and Williamson taking over their Wallaceburg office (Evening Record [Windsor], 30 Aug. 1911, 3, advert.). Williamson later died in London, Ont. on 16 February 1933 (obituary Border Cities Star [Windsor], 16 Feb. 1933, 3; 17 Feb. 1933, 9). An early photographic portrait of Williamson was published in the Evening Record [Windsor], 17 Dec. 1910, 1.
