Ockleshaw, Frederick

OCKLESHAW, Frederick (1880-1963), of Smithers, British Columbia, maintained an office there as an architect for at least 12 years, and he was the first professional architect to live and work in the Bulkley Valley region of northern B.C. Born at Halewood, Co. Lancashire, England on 17 February 1880, he was educated and trained in England, and later moved to Canada in 1920 with the intention to make the small town of Smithers his permanent home (Interior News [Smithers}, 25 Aug. 1920, 8). His name is linked to several buildings in Smithers, and in nearby Telkwa, B.C., but he later left Canada in June 1932 and retired in Paignton, Co. Devon. Ockleshaw died in the holiday resort of Puerto de Soller, on the island of Majorca, Spain on 9 March 1963 (England & Wales, National Probate Calendar, 1963, p. 200).
