Saint Louis, Arthur

SAINT LOUIS, Arthur (1873-1955), a prolific architect in Montreal, Que. who catered to the speculative building boom in residential architecture in that city during the period of rapid urban growth from 1890 to 1914. He began his career about 1896, and became a registered architect with the Province of Quebec Association of Architects on 13 September 1898. He specialized in the design of traditional three-storey tenement flats which still line the streets of many residential neighbourhoods in downtown Montreal and Outremont. He served many “repeat” clients such as John B. St. Louis (perhaps a brother), Joseph A. Pominville, Arthur Toupin, Zotique Riopelle, and other land owners, building contractors, and tradesmen who hired St. Louis to develop their vacant properties with designs for walk-up residential blocks featuring greystone-fronted facades required by the local City of Montreal building code during this era. Arthur St. Louis appears to have declined commissions for industrial, commercial and ecclesiastical work, and only one institutional project has been linked to his name, that of the City Hall for the Town of Montreal North (1917). His last recorded work dates from 1920, and he later died in Montreal on 22 April 1955 (obituary and port. La Presse [Montreal], 25 April 1955, 16).
