Newman, William

NEWMAN, William (1866-1952), of Windsor, Ontario and a business partner with John A. Maycock from March 1892 to January 1894 (see list of works under Maycock & Newman). He was born in Tilbury, Ontario on 22 January 1866, but he was educated and trained as a civil engineer, not as an architect. He studied at the School of Practical Science at the University of Toronto, then moved to Windsor, Ont. in 1890. In early 1892 Newman was invited by J.A. Maycock to form a partnership, but their collaboration ended in less than two years, and in 1893 Newman was appointed as the City Engineer for Windsor, and remained in this post until 1906. During this period, he worked privately as architect under his own name, and in the firm of Newman Brothers, Architects (with his brother John Newman). He later moved to Winnipeg and became President of the William Newman Construction Co., a position which he held for over 45 years. Newman died in Winnipeg on 6 January 1952 (obituary and port. Windsor Daily Star, 7 Jan. 1952, 5). He was later buried at Lakeview Cemetery in Leamington, Ont.
