Wilkinson, Harry Nevill

WILKINSON, Harry Nevill (1854-1905) was recorded as the staff architect to the Grand Trunk Railway Co. in Montreal, Que. from 1895 until his sudden death there in 1905. Born in Brighton, England on 6 December 1854, he emigrated to Canada in 1883 and by 1895 he was listed as an architect with the G.T.R (Montreal City Directory, 1895-96, 246), and he was likely responsible for the design of all stations, freight sheds and outbuildings erected by the G.T.R. in Canada during the period from before 1895 to 1905. He joined the Province of Quebec Association of Architects on 14 June 1898. Presumably it was personal financial issues, or pressures of his job, which may have precipitated his sudden death by suicide in Montreal on 27 June 1905 (obituary Gazette [Montreal], 28 June 1905, 12; and 29 June 1905, 12; Winnipeg Tribune, 28 June 1905, 9).
