Hills, Lucien

HILLS, Lucien (1842-1912), son of Albert H. Hills, was born in Hamilton in January 1842 and trained under his father with whom he later worked as office clerk and draughtsman. He commenced practise under his own name in 1874 and after the death of his father in 1878 he formed a partnership with William Leith (see list of works under Leith & Hills). The untimely death of Leith in March 1880 left Hills to continue the practise alone, but his ability to obtain important civic and institutional commissions never matched that of his father, as his career seemed to be eclipsed by a new generation of Hamilton designers including James Balfour and William Stewart. Hills practised until 1898 then took a position as assessor with the City of Hamilton, a post he held until early 1912. He died in Hamilton on 20 May 1912 (obituary in Spectator [Hamilton], 21 May 1912, 16)
