Saint Jean, Eugene

SAINT JEAN, Eugene (1892-1950) was the successor to the architectural practise of his father Casimir Saint Jean, who died unexpectedly in 1918. Eugene was born in Montreal on 21 March 1892 and graduated from the Ecole Polytechnique there in 1917. He trained under his father, but the untimely death of his father in July 1918 was a setback for the professional development of the career of his son, and Eugene did not open his own office until late 1922. He collaborated on the design of two significant ecclesiastical landmarks in Montreal, including the remarkably sophisticated modern Gothic design for St. Alphonse d’Youville Church (1929) for which Louis N. Audet of Sherbrooke, Que. is usually credited as the sole designer.

After 1930, only two projects by Saint Jean have been located, and it is unclear if he was working as a professional architect during this period. Saint Jean died in Montreal on 30 July 1950 (death notice La Presse [Montreal], 1 Aug. 1950, 29; biog. and port. in Biographies Canadiennes Francaises, 1928-29, 269; inf. from the Prov. of Quebec Assoc. of Architects, Montreal)
