Lortie, Pierre

LORTIE, Pierre (1835-1907), active in Montreal, Que. as an architect from 1880 onward, at first in partnership with Francois Xavier Mailhiot (see works under Mailhiot & Lortie). He appears to have learned the building trades in Quebec, and his name was recorded in 1871 as a contractor who was living and working in Montreal (Census of Canada, 1871, City of Montreal). From 1885 he maintained a professional office there as an architect in partnership with his son Alfred Lortie (born 1866). Many of his commissions were for speculative housing projects located in the west end neighbourhoods of Notre-Dame-de-Grace, and in St. Henri. Lortie died in Montreal on 4 March 1907 (death notice La Presse [Montreal], 5 March 1907, 14).
