Brickell, Eli F.

BRICKELL, Eli F. (1850-1934), a well-known architect active in Bradford, Pennsylvania and in western New York State. In 1910 he was credited with the design of a large office building in REVELSTOKE, B.C., commissioned by the Dominion Sawmills & Lumber Co. and erected on Victoria Road. This two storey block, nearly 100 ft. long, was described as an example of “….exceedingly imposing decorated Colonial design“, and featured a façade with six large Corinthian columns (Mail-Herald [Revelstoke], 3 Dec. 1910, 1, descrip.)

Brickell was born in England on 29 July 1850 and was brought to the United States as an infant in 1852. By 1880 both he and his brother William S. Brickell had opened an office in Olean, New York as “architects, builders & contractors”. Their partnership, known as the Brickell Brothers, received major commissions for buildings in Olean, and in surrounding towns, over the next 20 years, but after 1900 Eli F. Brickell decided to move across the state border to nearby Bradford, Pennsylvania. He continued to operate an office under his own name in Bradford until 1914 when he returned to Olean, N.Y. and remained active there for the duration of career. He died in Bradford on 20 April 1934 (obituary and biography Bradford Evening Star, 21 April 1934, 2).
