Feldman, Isadore

FELDMAN, Isadore (1887-1919), active in Toronto, Ontario from late 1911 until early 1915 when he was invited by his mentor James P. Hynes to join in a new partnership of Hynes, Feldman & Watson. Feldman was born and educated in Toronto, and served his entire term of training and apprenticeship in the office of J.P. Hynes from early 1908 until late 1911. He also attended night classes in the Atelier Lyle, a teaching studio established by John M. Lyle, and submitted one of his designs for “An Open Pavilion” which was published in the journal Construction [Toronto], iii, April 1910, 50. The following year, in 1911, Feldman commenced practise under his own name and specialised in the design of industrial and warehouse blocks for Jewish clients who worked in the garment trade. Many of these blocks, located in the industrial zone south of Queen Street West and west of University Avenue, still stand today, and have been adapted for new commercial and retail uses.

Feldman died suddenly in Detroit, Mich. on 9 January 1919 at the age of 32 years after suffering a bout of pneumonia (obituary Toronto Star, 11 Jan. 1919, 23; obit. Construction, xii, Jan. 1919, 11; obit. Contract Record & Engineering Review [Toronto], xxxiii, 22 Jan. 1919, 79). After this event, Watson moved to New York City to work for Warren & Wetmore, Architects, and Hynes promptly dissolved their partnership.
