Whale, George Richard

WHALE, George Richard (1908- 2001), active in Toronto, Ont. in a partnership with John Francis [Frank] Brennan (see list of works under Brennan & Whale). Whale was born in Wallaceburg, Kent County near Chatham, Ont. on 14 August 1908 and was educated and trained there. His name is recorded as an architect in Wallaceburg in 1934 and 1935, but by 1936 he had moved permanently to Toronto, and was employed in various offices as a draftsman, and later as a staff architect in the busy and successful office of Marani & Morris from 1947 to 1949. In early 1949 he was invited by J.F. Brennan to form a new partnership, and they continued to work together until after 1970. Only one project by Whale has been located, that of a large residence for James Harold Doyle, THORNHILL, ONT., 1947-48 (C.H.G., xxv, Sept. 1948, 19-21, illus. & descrip.). Whale died in Toronto on 22 May 2001 (death notice Toronto Star, 23 May 2001, B7; inf. Margaret Brennan, Toronto).
