Rudy, Josiah H.

RUDY, Josiah H. (1878-1947) was active in Edmonton, Alberta from 1908 to 1914. Born in Berlin [now Kitchener] Ontario on 24 July 1878, he was educated at Berlin High School and moved to Alberta in 1899. He learned the building trades in Lethbridge, Alta. where he was recorded as a carpenter. By 1906 he had relocated to Calgary and worked as contractor there from 1906 to 1908. In 1908 he opened an office under his own name in Edmonton and was credited with the design of a variety of commercial and institutional buildings in Edmonton and neighbouring towns of Holden and Viking.

In April 1914 he won an architectural competition over twelve other architects for his design of the General Hospital in Melville, Saskatchewan, to cost $150,000. His success with this commission prompted him to move to Melville, and he was still active there as late as 1920. No references to his professional activity after this date have been found. He died in Regina, Sask. on 12 February 1947 (biog and port. with list of works in Who’s Who & Why in Canada, 1914, 814).
