Turner, George E.

TURNER, George E. (fl. 1908-14) was an employee of the architectural department of the Provincial Dept. of Public Works for Alberta, and lived and worked in Edmonton from 1908 onward. In 1909 he was selected by a City of Edmonton committee to serve as Building Inspector and Staff Architect of the Edmonton Board of Education. His nomination was approved over that from Roscoe B. Whitten, an architect from Sydney, N.S. who had moved to Calgary in 1908 (Evening Journal [Edmonton], 17 Aug. 1909, 3; Edmonton Daily Bulletin, 17 Aug. 1909, 5). For the next four years, Turner produced designs for nearly twenty public schools in Edmonton, while the commissions for the larger high school buildings in the city were handed to the brilliant British-trained architect Roland W. Lines. Turner left his position as Staff Architect to the board in late 1913 and was succeeded by Robert M. Mitchell. No information has been found on the activity of Turner after 1914.
