Higginson, John W.

HIGGINSON, John W. (fl. 1860-95) was an architect and planing mill proprietor of the Beaver Wollen Mill in Hawkesbury, Ont. (Mitchell's Canada Directory, 1865-65). In 1863 he designed the Congregational Church at VANKLEEK HILL, ONT., '..a neat Gothic structure reflecting credit on the architect and builder J.W. Higginson of Hawkesbury, C.W.' (Canadian Independent [Toronto], x, March 1864, 307). In 1873 he prepared plans for the rectory of Trinity Anglican Church at HAWKESBURY, ONT. (C. Thomas,History of the Counties of Argenteuil, Que. and Prescott, Ont., 1896, 546). He was active in local political life serving as Reeve of the village of Hawkesbury for eleven years, and was instrumental in raising public interest in the construction of the High School in 1872, a building he may have designed (biog. in C.
