Gregg, Francis Thornton

GREGG, Francis Thornton (1841-1919) was active in the town of Nanaimo, British Columbia for nearly ten years, from 1888 until c. 1897. Born in Scotland in 1841, he arrived in Canada before 1886, and was recorded as an architect and topographical draftsman in Nanaimo in 1889. That same year, he formed a partnership with John J. Honeyman, a talented British-born architect who had recently arrived in British Columbia (Nanaimo Free Press, 29 Nov. 1889, 7; and 27 Dec. 1889, 1, advert.). They were active for less than a year, and their firm was dissolved in September 1890 (Nanaimo Free Press, 23 Sept. 1890, 4, advert.). Gregg continued to work under his own name in Nanaimo until after 1895. By 1899, he had moved to Vancouver (Vancouver City Directory, 1899, 168). No references to his activity after this date have been found, but he is almost certainly the same “ F.T. Gregg, architect” who was recorded in Seattle, Wash. from 1912 to 1917 (Seattle City Directory, 1912, 585). He continued to live and work in Seattle until 1917, and in early 1918 he moved back to Canada and became a resident of Lethbridge, Alberta. He later died there on 29 May 1919 (obituary Nanaimo Free Press, 7 June 1919, 1).
