Stimpson, Edgar Daniel

STIMPSON, Edgar Daniel (1878-1930) was one of the early architects of Alberta who conducted a successful practise in the town of Wainwright. Stimpson was a native of Minneota, Lyon County, Minnesota, and was born there on 5 November 1878. He moved to Canada in 1899, and in 1901 he was living in Okotoks, Alberta and working as a carpenter in the local building trades. By 1908, he had taken up residence in Wainwright, and began to advertise himself as both architect and engineer. He obtained commissions for institutional, ecclesiastical and commercial buildings in Wainwright, and for several projects nearby towns. By late July 1912 he had relocated to Edmonton, where he accepted a posting with the Alberta School Supply Co. (Wainwright Star, 7 Aug. 1912, 2). He remained there until at least 1921 before leaving for Washington State. Stimpson died in Baring, Washington on 8 August 1930 at the age of 51 years.
