Born in Cornwall, England, he came to Canada as a young man and settled in Kingston in c. 1850, then moved to Brantford, Ont. for two years. He relocated to Goderich in c. 1855 where he was architect and builder who ".....superintended the construction of many of the chief business blocks of Goderich", and it is likely that he designed many of these buildings. After 1880 he moved to his farm on the Huron Road and became a fruit farmer. He died there on 10 May 1906 (obituary Clinton New Era, 11 May 1906, 1).
