Swartz, Bertram

SWARTZ, Bertram [or Bert] (fl. 1917-1922), active in Toronto, Ont. from 1917 where his name is linked to the design of several commercial blocks of stores and apartments in the area of St. Clair Avenue West between Bathurst Street and Dufferin Street. Many of his clients included local builders such as Jacob Becker, Louis Coldoff and J.A. Graham, all of whom commissioned Swartz to design typical brick two storey blocks of retail stores with dwelling units above. Swartz maintained an office at 336 Dundas Street West from 1918 onward; in 1922, he was listed in local directories where one of the students training in his office was the young Romanian-born architect Benjamin Swartz (Toronto City Directory, 1922, p. 1416). It is unclear if Bertram Swartz may have been a relative of the younger Benjamin, but no information has been found on the activity of Bertram S. after 1922.
