Haldane, William

HALDANE, William (1876 - c. 1925), active in Nelson, B.C. where he was in partnership with George C. Egg from 1908 to 1910 (see list of works under Egg & Haldane). Born in Glasgow, Scotland on 27 April 1876, Haldane trained in the office of James Lymburn Cowan, a leading architect in Glasgow, from 1893 to 1897, then joined John Hutchison, FRIBA, in Glasgow (in 1898), and worked as assistant to Alexander Skirving, another well-known architect in that city, from 1899 to 1903. During this period of his apprenticeship, he studied architecture and building construction at the Glasgow School of Art.

Haldane emigrated to Canada in 1903 and settled in Montreal, where he worked for the leading firm of Edward & W.S. Maxwell (in 1903-05), and for Hutchison & Wood (in 1905-06). In early 1907 he moved to Vancouver, B.C. and worked as an assistant in the busy office of Parr & Fee in 1907-08. He decided to move to the B.C. Interior in late 1908 and formed a partnership with George C. Egg (C.R., xxii, 14 Oct. 1908, 30, partnership announcement). They operated two offices, one in Nelson (operated by G.C. Egg), and a branch office in nearby Fernie, B.C. (operated by Haldane). Their collaboration had ended by early 1911, with Haldane moving to Nelson to operate an office under his own name (W.A. Jeffries, Nelson Cty Directory, 1913, 68). He remained active there until 1920, but by 1921 he had returned to Vancouver to continue to work there. No information on his activity has been found after that date, but he may be the same "Will Haldane, architect" listed as a staff member of the office of Ross & MacDonald Architects in Montreal in 1928 (inf. Architectural Inst. of British Columbia, Membership Application for William Haldane, dated 1920)
