Sedger, Thomas Dealtry

SEDGER, Thomas Dealtry (1860-1941) of Victoria, B.C., active there from 1892 until his death in 1941. Born in Kingston, Co. Surrey, near London, England on 16 May 1860, he trained in the office of John L. Clemence (1822-1911), a successful architect in Lowestoft, Suffolk, England from 1880 to 1884, and later worked in the successor firm of Lucas Brothers in Norwich and Lowestoft. Sedger emigrated to Canada after 1885 and settled in Sunnyside, Man. where he spent nearly a decade as a farmer and homesteader. He moved to British Columbia after 1891. He is likely the same “Thomas D. Ledger” [sic] who was listed as an architect in Victoria in 1893 (British Columbia Directory, 1893, 917). By 1899, he was residing in nearby Esquimalt, West Victoria, and he opened an office under his own name in 1905. The following year, he invited Guy F. Pownall to join in a partnership which was active until 1909. After Pownall departed, Sedger continued to practise under his own name until 1914, but no references to his architectural work after this date have been found. Sedger died in Victoria, B.C. on 29 March 1941 (obituary Daily Colonist [Victoria], 30 March 1941, 3; Victoria Daily Times, 31 March 1941, 13; biog. D.
