Parkinson, Edward

PARKINSON, Edward (1878-1953), active in Winnipeg, Man. from 1910 until 1948. Born in Halifax, Co. Yorkshire, England in December 1878, he was educated and trained as an architect in Halifax, and later emigrated to Canada in 1910. He worked as an architect’s assistant in various Winnipeg offices, and commenced practise under his own name before 1926. In January 1927 he joined in a new partnership with James H. Halley, and they advertised themselves as being partners who were “...formerly J.D. Atchison & Co..“ an indication that they were the successors to the practise of Atchison after he had moved to California in 1924. Parkinson was a respected member of the profession and was elected by his colleagues as President of the Manitoba Association of Architects in 1929. In 1932 he worked in partnership with Arthur E. Cubbidge, as Parkinson & Cubbidge, preparing plans for a Collegiate Gothic design of a new building for St. Paul’s College in Winnipeg.

From 1938 to 1948 Parkinson served as Resident Architect for the Dominion Government, overseeing the construction of all federal government buildings in Manitoba. His duties included preparing the design for elaborate decorations of the Winnipeg Post Office for the 1939 Royal Visit, and he was congratulated for his “…simple, large scale motif” used for the designs (R.A.I.C. Journal, xvi, July 1939, 170). Parkinson retired in 1948 and later died in Winnipeg on 14 June 1953 (obituary Winnipeg Tribune, 16 June 1953, 11).
