Lafleur, Jean Marie

LAFLEUR, Jean Marie (1903-1985), an architect who lived and worked in Valleyfield, Quebec for the duration of his career from 1930 until after 1970. Born in St. Agathe-des-Monts, Que. on 27 October 1903, he was educated at the College Bourget in Rigaud and later studied architecture at the University of Montreal from 1924 to 1929. Unlike many of his professional colleagues who gravitated to the large cities to practise, Lafleur chose to remain in the town of Valleyfield where he devoted much of career to the design of churches and school buildings. An English-language biography on the architect, published in 1951, states that he also designed “…residences and commercial plants” in the region (National Reference Book [Toronto], 1951, 327-28). Lafleur died at Valleyfield in 1985 (biog. and port. in The National Reference Book, ix, 1951, 327-28).
