Villeroy, Leopold

VILLEROY, Leopold (1862- c. 1917), active in Winnipeg from 1904 onward. Born in Germany in 1862, he was educated and trained there, and likely began his career as an architect about 1890. He emigrated to Canada in 1904 and settled in Winnipeg. In the following year, he was in a brief partnership with the Polish-Canadian architect Ladilas de Jurkowski, as “Architects, with European, Canadian and United States experience” (Manitoba Morning Free Press [Winnipeg], 1 July 1905, 12, advert.). It appears that their collaboration lasted for only three months, then Villeroy worked alone until 1907 when he formed another partnership with a “Mr. Foucart“, as Foucart & Villeroy “Architects and Superintendents; Speciality in steel, reinforced concrete and fire proof buildings” (Manitoba Morning Free Press [Winnipeg], 30 April 1907, 6 advert.). In 1908 he assisted with the rebuilding and reconstruction of St. Joseph’s German Catholic Church, and in 1911 he designed St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, both in Winnipeg. In early February 1912 he left Manitoba and moved to Saskatoon where he applied for membership in the Saskatchewan Association of Architects (SAB, Membership Files of the S.A.A., Application from Leopold Villeroy dated 14 February 1912). In his application, he stated that he had been operating his own office as an architect “for the last 22 years”, an indication that he commenced his architectural career in Germany in 1890 or 1891. No references to his works in Saskatchewan have been found (inf. Murray Peterson, City of Winnipeg).
