Dumais, Joseph Honore Roland

DUMAIS, Joseph Honore Roland (1910-1982), a successful architect in Montreal, Que. who specialized in the design of educational buildings and private residences which were built in Montreal and surrounding towns. Born in Montreal on 13 September 1910, he graduated from the local Ecole des Beaux Arts in that city in 1935 and trained in the office of Rodolphe Lajoie of Montreal. He then worked as assistant for J. Albert Larue of Montreal, and for David Deshaies of Nicolet, Que. Dumais joined the Province of Quebec Assoc. of Architects in 1937. In 1946 he received First Prize (Quebec Region) for his residential design submitted in the Canadian Small House Competition (R.A.I.C. Journal, xxiv, Jan. 1947, 16, illus. & descrip.). Dumais retired from the profession in 1975, and died in Montreal on 13 October 1982 (obituary and port. La Presse [Montreal], 15 October 1982, C 11; inf. Province of Quebec Assoc. of Architects, Montreal). The Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal holds a large collection of drawings by Dumais dating from c. 1939 to c. 1970 (CCA Acc. AR 1983: 0002).
