Garland, Henry

GARLAND, Henry (1885 - 1975), active in Hamilton, Ont. where he maintained an office under his own name from October 1924 until c. 1935. Born in Ramsgate, Co. Kent, England on 1 February 1885, he arrived in Canada after 1920 and obtained a diploma in architecture from the International Correspondence Schools of Scranton, Penn. in February 1923. Although active in Hamilton for more than fifteen years, only one project has been linked to his name, that for the Shervine Apartments, Sherman Street at Vineland Avenue, HAMILTON, ONT ., 1931-32 (C.R., xlv, 14 Oct. 1931, 1257). He relocated to Ottawa after 1935 where he was one of several staff architects working for the federal Dept. of Public Works from 1946 to 1965. Garland later died in Ottawa on 3 May 1975 (death notice Ottawa Journal, 5 May 1975, 34; inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects). A small collection of his papers is now held by the National Archives of Canada, Acc. 81/5061).
