Hancock, Edward James

HANCOCK, Edward James (1889-1930) was active in Regina and Moose Jaw, Sask. c. 1911-15 as a partner in the office of Reilly, Dawson, Hancock and Reilly. Born in Gloucestershire, England on 24 January 1889 he emigrated to North Dakota in May 1903 and worked there for two of his uncles, the architects George D. Hancock & Walter B. Hancock of Fargo, North Dakota, the oldest architectural firm in that state established in 1882. He began his practise in Saskatchewan in August 1911 and joined the Regina firm of Reilly, Dawson & Reilly, representing their interests in Moose Jaw. While working there, he met another local architect Carl Volkman, with whom he was to later form a partnership in the city of Eau Claire, Wisconsin in July 1915 (see list of works under Volkman & Hancock). Their partnership was dissolved in December 1916, and both partners opened separate offices in Eau Claire, with Hancock specializing in educational and institutional buildings which he designed in a refined Beaux-Arts style. Hancock later died at Fargo, North Dakota in early July 1930 (obit. Eau Claire Leader, 3 July 1930, 2; inf. from Ronald L. Ramsay, Fargo, N.D.; Barry Elmer, Moose Jaw, Sask.; Gordon Fulton, Ottawa; inf. Sask. Association of Architects)
