Rogers & MacFarlane

ROGERS & MacFARLANE, architects of Detroit, Michigan, were credited with the design of a large Sanatorium at SANDWICH, ONT., overlooking the Detroit River, and built in 1900 (Detroit Free Press, 18 Nov. 1900, 27). The partnership consisted of James S. Rogers (1859-1921) and Walter MacFarlane (1860-1919). Rogers was born in Alexandria, Virginia on 5 December 1859 and studied architecture at Massachusetts Inst. of Technology in Boston. His business partner Walter MacFarlane was born in Cold Spring, N.Y. on 15 June 1859 and graduated from West Point Military Academy, then moved to Detroit to train under Gordon W. Lloyd, a leading architect in that city. Their partnership was forned in 1887 and they remained active until the death of MacFarlane on 16 December 1919 (obit. Detroit Free Press, 21 Dec. 1919, 22). Rogers later died in Maryland on 3 June 1921.
