Carswell, James W.

CARSWELL, James W. (1859-1914) of Chatham, Ont., was born in Ireland on 16 May 1859 and began his career as a carpenter and contractor in Ontario before 1880. He was in partnership with Harry J. Powell of Stratford during the period of 1897-99. They maintained two offices, one in Stratford where all commissions were handled by Powell, and another office in Chatham where Carswell carried out the local work (see list of works under Powell & Carswell). In 1899 Carswell opened his own office as an architect in Chatham, and in 1902 he moved to Windsor, Ont. (Detroit Free Press, 25 Jan. 1902, 2). He was active there until 1908 when he relocated to Toronto, and later died there on 8 May 1914 (obituary Chatham Daily Planet, 11 May 1914, 8)
