Wynn, Gordon Kenneth

WYNN, Gordon Kenneth (1910-1994), a native of Edmonton, Alberta and a partner in the leading architectural firm of Rule, Wynn & Rule. Born in Edmonton in 1910, he attended the newly formed Dept. of Architecture at the University of Alberta where he was educated under the supervision of the architect and director, Cecil S. Burgess, and graduated in 1936. A dearth of work for young architects made it difficult for Wynn to train in the profession, and from 1930 to 1936 he worked during the summer periods as a carpenter on building construction for the Alberta Dept. of Public Works, and after graduation, he was employed as an assistant to J.A. Buchanan, a local civil engineer and contractor.
One of his classmates at the School of Architecture in Edmonton was John U. Rule (1904-1978), and together they formed an architectural partnership in Edmonton in 1938. They were joined in 1940 by Peter L. Rule (1913-1964), and their office grew to become one of largest architectural offices in western Canada after WWII (see list of works by Rule, Wynn & Rule under the entry for John U. Rule). Wynn later served a term as President of the Alberta Assoc. of Architects in 1948-49, and remained active in the profession until after 1970. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Inst. of Canada in 1959, and died in Edmonton, Alta. on 16 October 1994 (obit. Edmonton Journal, 18 Oct. 1994, E9; inf. Alberta Assoc. of Architects). The Canadian Architectural Archives at the Univ. of Calgary holds an extensive collection of nearly 6,000 original architectural drawings prepared by the firm of Rule, Wynn & Rule from 1938 onward. A complete Finding Aid and Guide to the collection was published by the University of Calgary Press in 1997.
