Greene, Henry William

GREENE, Henry William (1884-1944), active in Winnipeg, Man. from 1904 until after 1922. Born in Straits Settlement (Singapore), in the Federated Malay States on 17 January 1884, he articled in the local office of the Architect’s Department of the Colonial Government, and moved to London, England before 1900 to work as a draftsman for Sir Ambrose M. Poynter (1867-1923), a prominent architect there. He then emigrated to western Canada in 1901 to try his hand at farming, but later moved to Winnipeg and opened an office as an architect in March 1904. The following year he was one of eight architects to submit an entry in the competition for the St. Boniface Town Hall (1905), but his design was set aside and Victor W. Horwood was declared the winner (Manitoba Free Press [Winnipeg], 16 June 1905, 16).

Greene applied for membership in the Manitoba Association of Architects in 1914, and continued to work in Winnipeg until 1923 when he moved to Los Angeles, Calif. where he later became the staff architect for Republic Pictures Corp., a leading motion picture production company. He died there on 21 May 1944 (obituary Los Angeles Times, 24 May 1944, 12; biog. Manitoba Free Press [Winnipeg], 25 March 1904, 16; inf. Manitoba Assoc. of Architects, Winnipeg).
