Meech, Victor Evelyn

MEECH, Victor Evelyn (1913-1987), active in Lethbridge, Alta. where he trained under his father H. William Meech, a successful architect in that city. Born on 24 May 1913 in Lethbridge, he was educated there and graduated from the University of Alberta in Edmonton in 1937. He worked as an assistant in his father’s office from 1937 onward. When his father retired from the profession in 1942 and moved to British Columbia, Victor E. continued to operate the office in Lethbridge and was later joined by Maurice S. Mitchell, a civil engineer who became a member of the firm in 1946. After the death of his father in June 1947, their office was renamed Meech, Mitchell & Meech, and after 1951 operated as Meech, Mitchell & Associates. Victor E. Meech was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Inst. of Canada in 1957. He died in Lethbridge on 14 September 1987 (obit. Lethbridge Herald, 16 Sept. 1987, 2; inf. Beth Wortman, Lethbridge Public Library). The evolution of their firm from 1951 until after 1970 is documented in the exhibition catalogue entitled Lethbridge Modern: Aspects of Architectural Modernism in Lethbridge from 1945 to 1970, pub. 2002, p. 55.
