Stanford, Leo Hunt

STANFORD, Leo Hunt (1898-1970), son of J. Hunt Stanford, was born on 16 February 1898 at Cambridge, England and was brought to Canada by his family in 1902. He was educated in Toronto and almost certainly trained under his father who invited him to form a partnership in March 1922 (C.R., xxxvi, 29 March 1922, 293). When his father retired from the profession due to a long term illness in 1933, Leo H. took over much of the day-to-day activity in their office. After his father died in October 1935, Leo was the successor to the practise, but he chose to retain the original name of the office as “J. Hunt Stanford & Son” until 1945 when he formed a new partnership with Abraham Wilson. They remained active in Toronto until after 1960. L.H. Stanford died in Richmond Hill, Ont. on 5 September 1970 (obituary Toronto Star, 8 Sept. 1970, 54; inf. Barbara Myrvold, Toronto). A photographic portrait of Stanford appeared in the Globe & Mail, 24 June 1952, 8-9, advert.
