McKay, Burton

McKAY, Burton (1829-1873), active in Halifax, N.S. as an architect and builder where he advertised his professional services, stating that “..Particular attention is paid to Church Architecture" (Morning Chronicle [Halifax], 10 Jan. 1856, 3, advert.; 3 March 1856, 3, advert.). No information has yet been uncovered regarding specific buildings designed by him in the Halifax area. Born in Pictou, N.S., he appears to have been active in Nova Scotia until at least 1860 when he moved to California and continued his career there as an architect in the town of Eureka, Humboldt Co.. He died on 23 June 1873 at age 44 after being murdered by an assailant in Eureka (obituary Acadian Recorder [Halifax], 8 July 1873, 3; inf. Garry Shutlak, Halifax).
