Allan, George A.

ALLAN, George Alexander (1870-1937). born in rural Ontario on 14 May 1870, was a prolific architect in Brockville and in the surrounding counties of Leeds and Grenville in eastern Ontario. Together with Owen E. Liston, another local architect, he dominated the architectural scene there for nearly twenty years. While no information on his early education or training has been found, it is presumed that he had some professional architectural training in order to conceive such robust and vigorous stone landmarks in Brockville like the Fulford Block (1888-89), erected for G.T. Fulford and executed in a modified Romanesque Revival style. Allan appears to have left Brockville in early 1898 but in June 1905 it was announced that he had 'recently opened an office in Brockville where he was formerly in practice for a number of years' (C.A.B., xviii, June 1905, 96). No references to his work appear after 1906. His portrait can found in the Brockville Recorder, 26 October 1894, 2 (inf. Canada, 1901 Census, Brockville, South Ward D-2, 1). Allan died in Toronto on 3 November 1937 and he was later buried in Brockville, Ont. (death notice Globe & Mail [Toronto], 4 Nov. 1937, 7; Toronto Star, 4 Nov. 1937, 39).
