McDonald, John

McDONALD, John (fl. 1870-1900) was noted as “Mr. McDonald, the architect” of the Roman Catholic Chapel at WEST ARICHAT, CAPE BRETON, NOVA SCOTIA (Halifax Citizen, 23 Dec. 1871, 3). In that same article he was credited as having completed, during the previous year, a new Roman Catholic chapel in the nearby town of D’ESCOUSSE, NOVA SCOTIA, (1870). This church may have served as a model for his design of the church at West Arichat. Both chapels are located on Isle Madame, near Port Hawkesbury. He is likely the same person as "John McDonald, Architect" of Antigonish who was called to testify in a court case in 1897 (Evening Mail [Halifax], 14 Oct. 1897, 6).
