McColeman, Neil

McCOLEMAN, Neil (1885-1978), an architect who lived and worked in several towns including North Bay (in 1907-08), Brantford (in 1908-10), in Sarnia as a partner in the firm of McColeman & McColeman (in 1915-17), and in Toronto from 1919 until after 1950. Born in Stayner, Ont. on 6 January 1885, he left school at the age of 14 and “…studied architecture from text books”, but does not appear to have obtained a formal education in the subject. He specialized in residential design and construction, and provided plans for houses to several Toronto builders and contractors including works for the Buyers Doors & Manufacturing Co., Pacific Avenue, Toronto (from 1919 to 1931), and for James J. Quirk, Builder, from 1920 to 1930. He joined the Ontario Assoc. of Architects in 1931, and retired from the Association in December 1961. He later died in Toronto on 15 August 1978 (inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects). No original source citations to his works have yet been found.
