Martland, John

MARTLAND, John ( 1878-1957) was active in Edmonton, Alta., at first in private practise from 1910, and later as City Architect for Edmonton from 1919 until 1943. Born at Moss Lane, Lathom, Co. Lancashire, England on 27 March 1878, he was educated at the Royal Technical Institute at Salford, and studied architecture and building construction at the College of Technology which was affiliated with Victoria University in Manchester. He articled with John Riding, an architect at Ormskirk, and moved to Liverpool in 1905 where he opened an office under his own name.
He decided to emigrate to Canada in 1910, and settled in Edmonton, Alta. where he worked as assistant to Roland W. Lines, a talented British-born architect who had arrived in Edmonton in 1906. After several months in Lines office, he joined the Building Inspector’s Dept. of the City of Edmonton as a draftsman. He left in 1912, and opened an office in partnership with David Hardie (see works under Hardie & Martland). After three years he returned to civic service, joining the provincial Telephone Department as a draftsman. In October 1919 he was transferred to the City Engineer’s Department and was appointed City Architect, overseeing all of the architectural work for city-owned buildings in Edmonton for the next twenty-five years. He was also active as a member of the Alberta Association of Architects, and served as the President of that professional organization in 1941-42. Martland retired from his position as City Architect for Edmonton in December 1943, but he continued to practise in partnership with T.G. Aberdeen. Martland moved to Victoria, B.C. after 1950 and died there on 10 December 1957 (obit. and port. Edmonton Journal, 11 Dec. 1957, 58; biog.
