Marshall, Lorne Eric

MARSHALL, Lorne Eric (1905-2006), active in Montreal, Que. for his entire career, and a partner in the firm of Barott, Marshall, Montgomery & Merrett from 1945 until after 1950 (see list of works under Ernest Barott). Born in Montreal, Que. in 1905, he studied architecture at McGill University and at the University of Pennsylvania (1924-28), then moved to Michigan where he graduated with honours from the College of Architecture at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1931. After extensive travel and study in Europe and Middle East, he returned to Montreal in 1935 to work as assistant to Ernest Barott, a leading architect in that city. In 1936 he submitted his own scheme in the Dominion Housing Act Small House Competition, and received an Honourable Mention for his striking design of a house in the International Style (R.A.I.C. Journal, xiii, May 1936, 89, 95, illus.)
Marshall was invited to become a full partner in Barott’s firm in 1945. The office was later renamed Marshall & Merrett, Stahl, Elliot & Mill, and they operated offices in Montreal, Kingston, and Ottawa. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada in 1959, and retired in 1977. Marshall died in Montreal on 17 April 2006 at the age of 101 years (obit. Gazette [Montreal], 22 April 2006, D 11). An extensive collection of architectural drawings by the firm of Barott, Marshall, Montgomery and Merrett is now held at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal.
