Marotte, Edgar Samuel

MAROTTE, Edgar Samuel (1895-1977), active in Montreal, Que. and a graduate of the School of Architecture at McGill University in 1916. He joined the Province of Quebec Assoc. of Architects in 1921, and was also registered as an Associate Member of the Royal Inst. of British Architects in London. At some point after 1925 he moved to New York City to work for one or more architects there; by 1930 he had returned to Montreal to open an office under his own name (R.A.I.C. Journal, vii, Dec. 1930, 463). It appears this venture was not financially successful; within a year he had joined Henri S. Labelle in late 1931 and remained with him until 1936. In 1939 he left Canada and moved to Long Beach, California where he continued to practise (R.A.I.C. Journal, xvi, April 1939, 92). In 1945, he was appointed City Architect of Long Beach, and he held this post until his retirement in 1961. Marotte died in Long Beach on 23 January 1977 (obituary and port. The Independent [Long Beach], 26 Jan. 1977, B 5, with port.). A photographic portrait of Marotte taken in 1935 was published in The Daily Commercial News [Toronto], 2 Jan. 1936, 4.
