Malouin, Francois Xavier

MALOUIN, Francois Xavier (1799-1882), active in Quebec City as a contractor from 1833, and as an architect from 1848 onward. He was also known by the last name of Rinfret, but from 1849 he is recorded in Quebec City directories with the surname of Malouin. Born in Quebec in 1799, he was employed as a day labourer for eighteen years by John Phillips, and was recorded in sources as having worked with Frederick Hacker. From 1833 he was contracted to work as a mason on many large buildings in Quebec City designed by others, and during the next 18 years he gained extensive experience to build, and to design, both residential, commercial and institutional buildings. His name as “architect” first appears in McKay’s Quebec Directory for 1848-49, and his professional occupation is consistently listed as an architect through until the late 1870’s. He died in Quebec City on 9 October 1882, and published obituary articles refer to him as ’architecte and constructeur’ (death notice in L’Evenement [Quebec City], 10 Oct. 1882, 3; Journal de Quebec [Quebec City], 10 Oct. 1882, 3). A full biography and list of works by Malouin can be found in A.J.H. Richardson, Quebec City: Architects, Artisans and Builders, 1984, 492-93.
