MacRae, Alexander Grant

MacRAE, Alexander Grant (1882-1973), active in Toronto, Ont. as a staff architect for the Dominion Realty Co., the real estate arm of the Canadian Bank of Commerce. Born in Inverness, Scotland on 12 April 1882, he was educated at the Inverness Technical & Art School where he studied architecture and construction. He served an apprenticeship with Alexander F. Mackenzie of Inverness (in 1897-1902), then worked as assistant to James R. Rhind of Glasgow (in 1902-06). MacRae moved to New York City in 1906 where he was employed by Alexander Mackintosh, and the following year moved to Toronto to join the office of Samuel G. Curry. In late 1907 he was invited to form a partnership with Duncan F. Forbes (as Forbes & MacRae, 1907-08), then formed a new partnership with A. Mackenzie Brydon (as Brydon & MacRae 1908-09). Only one independent commission by MacRae has been found, that for a private residence for an unnamed client in MILTON, ONT., 1909 (C.R., xxiii, 7 April 1909, 30-1, illus. & descrip.).

In 1911 he joined the architectural department of the Dominion Realty Co. and worked under the direct supervision of Victor Horsburgh, Chief Architect of the bank. He held this position until after 1950, and retired from the Ontario Assoc. of Architects in 1956. MacRae died in Toronto on 25 January 1973 (inf. Ontario Association of Architects).
